Colorful Caladium

Ok, so I knew I wanted to try Caladium all winter.  I was biding my time among the winter months to get started on this plant.  So why did it take me 1/2 the summer to get it?  Because I am procrastinating, easily- side-tracked-novice gardener who has no idea how to prioritize.  That's why!
I had this pot on the porch step, but it was withering from too much sun.  I pulled it under the porch and, as you can see it has grown significantly!  It has many baby sprouts coming up, but many of them go limp, loose their color and die, while the big ones stay healthy.  I thought they needed more water.  Nope.  I thought I watered too much.  Nope.  Still a mystery.
This whole Caladium idea was started by my sweet friend's wedding which took place in her Grandmother's garden.  I have to say that it was one of my turning points in deciding that I wanted to do this green thumb thing!  It's not a good photo, but here is her Tower of Caladium.

I guess the affect is lost in the photo.  But, I was very impressed.  The bright leaves were spilling over each other and had completely swallowed whatever pot  was feeding them.
I have one variety of Caladium from last summer that I wintered in my basement.  I shall try that again with these plants and see what kind of collection I can grow over the next few years.  Makes me feel like I know what I'm doing AND saves me money!
NOTE TO SELF:  Start this plant early in the season for 2012.  Don't way until mid June!!
