35 things to remember for next year's garden

  1. Petunias grow well in front and Impatiens grow well in back.
  2. Lobelia would not grow ANYWHERE in back.  Try small plant in front.  Don't hold your breath.
  3. Million Bells was beautiful in front.  Try more colors.  Don't let them dry out.
  4. Mulch EVERYTHING!!!
  5. Prune the store bought annuals - vigorously.  Even after they start first bloom.
  6. More pots.  So love the pots.
  7. Spray plants weekly for Japanese Beetles and Aphids.
  8. Need more slug and bunny deterrents around hostas.
  9. Coffee grounds around hostas went very well in Spring.
  10. Prune the Coleus to shape.  Cut to make some bushy and fill out.  Let some grow tall.  The ones that grow tall - choose one variety per pot and pair with a cascading plant (Licorice or creeping Jenny, even Sweet Potato climber)
  11. Buy only a few of each color/variety of Coleus, Impatiens, Petunia, Sweet Potato Vine and root in water.  They typically only took 4 days to root.
  12. Alyssum stopped giving out blooms after start of summer.  Don't buy.
  13. Use more dark Sweet Potato Vine (blackie) - cut to be bushy or it will end up one long vine.
  14. Vine from the actual sweet potato will climb very fast.
  15. LOVE the Moonflower!  Bloomed in Sept (Anna's bloomed in Aug).  Give it something to climb like lattice or chicken wire around tree or up fence.
  16. Baskets with mesh dry out very quickly.
  17. Plant in tear drop shape groupings instead of straight lines.  This will make for a better display and have a "lushier" look.  Beginners mistake!!!
  18. WATER WATER WATER WATER
  19. Plant impatiens between hostas and other young plants until they mature and fill in.   Will bring more color and keep me from filling that space with more plants.
  20. I don't like empty space in garden.
  21. Hanging pots with Impatiens - try a color bleed (start with light pink and with each pot get brighter).  An outer edge cascade would be nice - i.e. Licorice
  22. Hanging Clay pots on Fence: SPV (sweet potato vine) got too leggy and heavy, broke off completely in early Sept.  Cut back often, or choose another plant.  Try Diamond Frost instead of Alyssum for longer bloom time.  Impatiens did well.
  23. Paint the pink gate....anything but pink.
  24. Plant more cannas and plant earlier to get full season bloom.
  25. Buy more seeds and sew directly into ground (poppy, aster....)
  26. Don't buy plants unless your'e going to plant them the same day.  Too many died waiting for me to get around to it.  Waisted money or a generous offering from a friend.
  27. Try another Rose of Sharon bush in back next to shed.
  28. Caladiums do well under the porch.  Plant earlier and keep moist.
  29. Don't divide the Heucheras this year.  They take too long to recover.
  30. Leave the young hostas for a whole year.  Move ONLY if you have to - don't divide yet.
  31. Begonias not happy in big pot under grass.  Needed more sun.
  32. Love love love the Elephant ears.
  33. For all beds except the brick bed plant Partial shade to Full Shade plants.
  34. Early Fall I can't wait for Tulips.  Early Summer I can't stand the Tulips.
  35. I want Daffodils.
