"The 1st year they sleep, the 2nd year the creep and the 3rd year they leap."
Well, it's 3 years old it sure leapt - there is no doubt about that! But why only the 1 HUGE bloom?
Late frost? Too much watering? Not enough fertilizer? Last hear there was only 1 bloom on a very small plant and they were pinker - less of the white and deeper pink. Is this just the life cycle of this shrub?

I just found your blog (which is lovely) and am a bit late on this answer, but did you prune in the spring? I believe this hydrangea blooms from old and new wood, but if you pruned old wood you may have gotten rid of most of your blooms- ask me how I know! I did this hydrangeas and an exquisite wisteria before I learned my lesson. I hope it's done better this year (2012).
