Garden Walk: Rockford, IL (Post 4)

I went on this garden walk waaay over a month ago, and I loved it.  I just had no time to finish th post.  It's been so long now, half my brain says "Who cares." But the other half is bothered by it being unfinished and that I didn't even get to my favorite spot!  So, I'm determined to wrap it up and finish, then get back to my own garden. I've misplaced the booklet, so I can't name the gardens.  When I find it, I'll edit the post.

This was a very creative spot.  They did a great job of hiding their pool among the garden beds.  I really felt the pool was there to show off the greens instead of the other way around. If you were to float in the pool facing away from the house, you may be tricked into feeling you are far far away from the state of Illinois.

Theme of the day, once again...weeping evergreens.

I'm more of a linear person than I care to admit.  I'd like to think that I see circles and soft lines everywhere, but the truth is, I'm drawn to fill corners and use the lines given to me.  It's what I do but it's not what I want.  I'm a walking contradiction.  So the photo with the gate placed ON the curve of the path with pots around it makes me stop and think.  The metal is lovely with all it's lines, and one gets to enjoy it because it's not hidden back among many distractions.
But in my own home, it looks "left behind" or "almost finished."
My husband would say, "Where are you going to put that?"  I'd say "Right there."  And because he loves me, he'd walk away with out another word wishing he'd understand why I do what I do.  I would see it, then eventually move the pretty gate in a nice corner spot.  That's why I love other peoples gardens.  I am inspired to move out of my corners!

This was very far from my style, but my main take away was the little touches...

I love those cute little birdie feet.  I can't find them anywhere around me.  It's on my list for when I visit the larger garden centers with my mom.

I'm afraid to hang things on my siding - but Part of my garden wall is the tan siding of my garage and it's a large empty space.  This gives me inspiration.

Pretty Pot of annuals

Coleus, Persian Shield, Petunas, and other annuals

Our next stop was breathtaking.  It was unexpected.  It was massive.
La Paloma Gardens.  Folks in and around Rockford, probably knew what to expect, but Mom and I were thinking it was another home owner sized lot with something unique and pretty. But it was much more than that.

In lieu of being overly loquacious, I'll just say these acres of gardens are hidden in an established neighborhood amongst mid century homes with long backyards.  One would never imagine this view waits just beyond the gate.  This home owner bought the home next door so she could have both lots to tend.  I do believe this is used on a corporate scale for parties and weddings.  I asked the homeowner if she rents out her garden and she said 'No', that is was just for her enjoyment.  But then I found her website that advertises her gardens.  She must have misunderstood my question. http://lapalomagardens.com

One snakes around the side of the house on a narrow path, turns the corner and finds a sight to behold.

You walk down stairs that was created for a bridal entrance, and you are among quiet ferns and hostas who (if you are in a wedding gown) are quietly admiring you.  This is what's going on in my mind anyway..  For some reason many of the garden walkers wore blue today.  I thought that was kind of funny.

There were not many flowers in bloom while we were there.  The space was so expansive that we actually forgot to look down and inspect individual pairings and look for stems with buds, our eyes were scanning the scenery taking it all in.

A takeaway from this garden experience is my further confidence that I want to create sitting areas amongst my beds.  I care very little if they are actually used (much to the chagrin go the Hubby), I just love the ideas they send out.
Come. Sit.  Relax.  Nap.  Read.  Speak Softly.  Watch nature.  Get engaged. Make plans. Do Nothing.

Soft Summer Blues

There was a greenhouse with a few blooming beds.  These were my 2 favorites.  I don't remember, because I can never seem to distinguish, if this is Larkspur, Delphinium or Monkshood.  The others are Foxglove and Lupine - but I know this is neither of them.  I think it is Larkspur.  If anyone can correct me - please do so.

I love the soft violet and blue mixture.
